Chiropractic Care for Canberra's Veteran Community

Canberra is home to a large veteran community, and we welcome DVA card holders warmly. With a valid card and a current GP referral, your eligible chiropractic care is funded by DVA and billed directly to the department, so you can focus on getting better, not on paperwork or payment.

Canberra and the surrounding region have long been home to a substantial community of serving and former Defence personnel, and we consider it a privilege to look after them. Years of service can leave their mark on the body, old injuries that never fully settled, the wear of heavy loads and hard physical work, the aches that arrive with age, and chiropractic care can help assess, manage and ease many of these musculoskeletal problems.

For eligible veterans, the Department of Veterans' Affairs funds that care. Provided you hold a valid DVA card and have the necessary GP referral, your treatment with us is billed straight to DVA, meaning there is no out-of-pocket cost for eligible care and nothing for you to claim back. Our reception team is well practised in the DVA process and handles the administrative side, so your visits can be about your health rather than forms and fees.

We understand, too, that veterans are not a single, uniform group. Some are young and recently transitioned, carrying an acute injury from service; others are well into retirement, managing the long tail of decades of physical demands. Whatever stage you are at, our approach is the same: a thorough assessment, an honest account of where chiropractic can help and where it cannot, and treatment shaped around your body and your history rather than a fixed routine. If your problem falls outside what chiropractic can properly address, we will say so plainly and help point you toward the right care, because that honesty is part of the respect we think veterans are owed.

Being a settled, long-established practice matters here too. We have cared for Canberra families across generations, and many of our veteran patients have been coming to us for years, so their treatment is informed by a genuine, ongoing relationship rather than starting cold each visit. That continuity, combined with a genuine understanding of how the DVA system works, makes us an easy and reliable place to keep your care on track over the long term, year after year.

What your card covers

Gold Card and White Card: What Is Covered

A DVA Gold Card covers clinically necessary care for all your conditions, including eligible chiropractic care. A White Card covers treatment for specific conditions the department has accepted. In both cases, with a GP referral, eligible care is funded by DVA and billed directly, at no cost to you.

The two most common DVA cards work a little differently, and it is worth understanding which applies to you.

Gold Card

Covers treatment for all clinically necessary health care needs, whether or not a condition is related to service. Eligible chiropractic care, with a GP referral, is funded by DVA and billed directly to the department.

White Card

Covers treatment for specific injuries or conditions DVA has accepted as service-related (and certain other categories). Chiropractic care for an accepted condition, with a GP referral, is likewise covered and billed to DVA.

In practice, the key is your GP referral. Your doctor confirms that chiropractic care is clinically appropriate and, for a White Card, that it relates to an accepted condition. Once that referral is in place and we have your card details, we bill DVA directly for your eligible visits, so you pay nothing on the day. If you are ever unsure what your particular card covers, our reception team or your DVA contact can clarify it, and you can read how DVA sits alongside other funding on our fees and rebates page.

It is worth noting that DVA sets the fees and conditions for the care it funds, not us, and we work within those arrangements. That is actually good news for you: it means the terms are consistent and clear, and it removes any question of surprise costs for eligible care. Where something falls outside what your card covers, we will always tell you before treatment rather than after, so you are never caught out. Our aim is simply to make using your entitlement as straightforward and stress-free as it should be, so nothing stands between you and the care you have earned.

The referral, step by step

How the DVA Referral Process Works (D904)

DVA-funded chiropractic care requires a referral from your GP, usually made on the standard DVA allied-health referral form (the D904). Your doctor completes it, you bring it to us with your DVA card, and we bill the department directly. Each referral runs for a defined time and a capped number of visits, after which your GP simply issues a fresh one.

  1. See your GP. DVA-funded chiropractic care starts with your general practitioner, who decides it is clinically appropriate and provides a referral, generally on the standard DVA allied-health referral form, the D904.
  2. Bring the referral and your card. Bring the referral to your first appointment along with your DVA card. That is all we need to begin treating and to bill DVA on your behalf; there is no form for you to lodge.
  3. We bill DVA directly. For your eligible visits, we invoice the Department of Veterans' Affairs directly at the DVA fee, so there is no charge to you on the day and no rebate to chase.
  4. Renew when needed. A referral covers a set period and a set number of visits. When it is due to run out, your GP simply issues a new one. We keep an eye on this with you so your care is not interrupted.

Not sure where to start? If you think you may be eligible but have not yet spoken to your GP, phone our reception team. We can explain exactly what to ask your doctor for and what to bring, so the referral is right the first time and your care can begin without delay.

Gentle, low-force Activator Method chiropractic care suitable for older veterans in Canberra
Comfortable for older bodies

Gentle, Low-Force Options for Older Veterans

Many older veterans prefer a gentler approach, and we offer it. The low-force Activator Method uses a small hand-held instrument instead of a manual thrust, making it a comfortable, controlled option for those with fragile joints, osteoporosis concerns, or simply a preference for something less forceful.

Not everyone wants, or should have, a firm manual adjustment, and that is especially true for older patients. Concerns like thinning bones, arthritic joints, or a general wariness of being cracked are completely understandable, and they are no barrier to care here. Ours is among just a handful of clinics in the Canberra region trained in the Activator Method, a gentle, low-force technique that delivers a small, precise impulse through a hand-held instrument rather than a manual push.

For many older veterans it is an ideal fit: controlled, comfortable and easy to tolerate, while still working to restore movement and ease pain. We will always assess you carefully first, take your full history and any conditions into account, and tailor the approach to what is safe and comfortable for your body. This gentler care also sits at the heart of our gentle seniors care, so you are in experienced hands whatever your age or fragility.

Gentleness does not mean doing less; it means doing the right amount, precisely. Alongside the Activator technique, we draw on soft-tissue work, careful mobilisation and simple, achievable advice you can use at home, all pitched to your comfort and your goals. Many veterans come in wanting to stay independent and active, to keep gardening, walking the dog, or lifting a grandchild without pain, and that practical, quality-of-life focus is exactly what guides how we treat. You will never be talked into more than you need, and you will always understand what we are doing and why.

Getting started

Booking as a DVA Patient

Booking as a DVA patient is simple: phone our reception team, mention you are a DVA card holder, and bring your card and GP referral to your first visit. We handle the DVA billing from there. If you do not yet have a referral, we will explain exactly how to get one.

We have kept the process as straightforward as possible, because the last thing a veteran needs is more red tape. The easiest way to start is to phone our reception team and let them know you are a DVA card holder. They will talk you through what to bring, check whether your referral is in order, and find you an appointment that suits, including Saturdays and gentler, low-force options if you would prefer them.

To your first visit, bring your DVA card and your GP referral. That is all that is needed for us to treat you and to bill the department directly for your eligible care. If you are also new to the practice, it is worth glancing over our new patient information beforehand, which explains what a first visit involves, from the initial assessment through to the plan of care. From there, our reception team looks after the DVA paperwork so you can simply get on with feeling better. It is the least we can do for those who have served.

You are also welcome to bring a partner, carer or family member to your appointments if that helps, and to raise any access needs when you book so we can make your visit as comfortable as possible. We are upstairs with free parking directly opposite, and our reception team is glad to help with anything practical. Above all, we want using your DVA entitlement here to feel welcoming and easy, never like a hassle. If you have any questions at all about eligibility, referrals or what to expect, a quick phone call is the fastest way to get clear answers before you come in.
